North American Monsoon Impacts Southern California's Coastal Low Clouds

چکیده

Low-level stratiform clouds modulate California's coastal climate during the warm season. Previous work describing seasonal and daily variability of low cloudiness (CLC) suggests that in July, August, September southern CLC is under influence an additional driver, which has less impact northern California. In this work, we introduce link free-tropospheric moisture dictated by North American Monsoon (NAM) processes can California CLC. We use situ remote sensing observations, as well reanalysis single column model simulations to identify investigate previously missing component. find monsoonal advected southeasterly flow from core NAM region into reduces diminishing cloud-top longwave cooling. To add already complex brew known factors influencing cloudiness, another one hereby introduced should be accounted for future work.

The low-level circulation of the North American Monsoon as revealed by QuikSCAT

[1] Five years (1999–2003) of near-surface QuikSCAT ocean winds over the Gulf of California and northeast Pacific Ocean are used to characterize the changes in the low-level circulation associated with the North American Monsoon. Our analysis shows that the onset of the summer season is accompanied by a seasonal reversal of the flow along the Gulf of California, with the establishment of a time...

Dynamics of a Simulated North American Monsoon Gulf Surge Event

Gulf surges are transient disturbances that propagate along the Gulf of California (GoC) from south to north, transporting cool moist air toward the deserts of northwest Mexico and the southwest United States during the North Americanmonsoon. They have been shown to modulate precipitation and have been linked to severe weather and flooding in northern Mexico and the southwest United States. The...

The effect of the MJO on the North American Monsoon

The effect of the Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) in the eastern Pacific on the North American monsoon is documented using NCEP–NCAR reanalysis and daily mean precipitation data from 1958 to 2003. It is found that positive zonal wind anomalies in the eastern tropical Pacific lead to above-normal precipitation in northwest Mexico and Arizona from several days to over a week later. This connectio...

The American Monsoon Systems

This paper examines similarities and differences among major features of the North and South American monsoon systems. Over both North and South America the summertime circulation shows upper-level anticyclone/low-level heat low structures. These develop at different distances from the equator. It is argued that ascent to the east where subtropical convergence zones develop, and subsidence over...

Impacts of the East Asian monsoon on lower tropospheric ozone over coastal South China

The impact of the East Asian monsoon (EAM) on climatology and interannual variability of tropospheric ozone (O3) over the coastal South China was investigated by analyzing 11 years of ozonesonde data over Hong Kong with the aid of Lagrangian dispersion modeling of carbon monoxide and calculation of an EAM index. It was found that the seasonal cycle of O3 in the lower troposphere is highly relat...
